Mention places such as Fraser Island and the Great Sandy Strait and the adventurous spirit of most east coast boaties will be stirred with rapturous daydreams of warm balmy weather, comfortable cool nights and clear crystal waters teeming with marine life.

Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, is pounded by surf on one side, while the other side is protected, the waterway known as the Great Sandy Strait.  It is one of the most superb and safest cruising areas in the world. 

The Straits provide excellent protection from the season's prevailing winds (SE in Winter and NE in Summer).  At the northern end lies Hervey Bay and Platypus Bays, breeding and resting grounds in the late winter to early spring for Humpback Whales and their calves.

At the bottom of Fraser Island, the straits spill out into the Pacific at Inskip Point, then onto the golden sands of Rainbow Beach.

Garry's Anchorage is the most popular stop-over in the Straits for cruising yachts, and it is not uncommon to see a world traveler holed up here after a rough passage.  Being tucked up in Garry's during a howling sou'easter is like being home in front of a fire on a rainy winter's night - snug and comforting.

Enjoy the natural tranquility on the quiet waters of the Tin Can Bay Inlet and see dolphins, turtles, bird life and maybe a dugong. Try the canoeing discovery tours, hire your own boat, or take the Dolphin Ferry.
